After landing he attempted to retrieve supplies from other US helicopters that had landed but was soon surrounded by rebel forces who began firing machine guns into his position. Kepner took cover behind an armored vehicle but before long he was forced to take off running through power lines while being shot at by snipers. Kepner writes in his journal that he was shot “in the right hand, my back, left ankle and the top of my back.” Kepner was later rescued by a helicopter but while being transported to a field hospital was told his platoon suffered 27 killed and 16 wounded.
